Three years ago the VexEDR group started with teams working out of homes and we have now grown into our space at the Freshman Campus. We are excited for the success and we would like to offer the same opportunity to elementary students.
Vex Robotics has a program called VexIQ which is for students between 4th and 8th grade*. The robots are easier to build but they still require to be designed and programmed by students. The difference in competition is that student teams compete as allies against the clock on a 4 x 8 foot field. More information on the 2016 game is available at here.
While 6th grade in HPS is at the middle school we would prefer to keep 6th graders in the elementary VexIQ program. The other schools systems that we compete against use this age range and we would rather a student have a positive experience competing with kids closer to their age. A 6th grade team competing against a high school team may be too large of an experience gap.
At times we can make an exception for a 6th grade student to be part of a VexEDR MS team. Students interested in this exception should contact the Hudsonville Robotics leadership by emailing email@example.com
How do we start a VexIQ team?
We are looking for volunteers that are interested in providing this program to their students. Hudsonville Robotics has laid the groundwork but we are in need of parents interested in helping the program succeed. If you want to start a team at your elementary school you simply need to find a coach and at least four interested students that want to build a robot. Registration needs to happen in September to take part in the competition season. Contact the Hudsonville Robotics leadership by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If a VexIQ team is formed then they will compete in a Monday league at Jenison High School and in one tournament – TBD.
*Students in 7th and 8th grade compete in a different VexIQ league instead of elementary.
